Grandtully (pronounced Grantly) is well known for white-water canoeing, including sections of grade 3 water. Grandtully is on the River Tay rather than Strathearn, but this area has long been seen as a possible orienteering venue by Event Coordinator Terry O’Brien of St Andrew's (Glasgow) Orienteers or STAG. In 2017 they celebrated their 35th Anniversary at Grandtully, using a very small part of the mapped area. Since then the area has been extended further to the north.

Travel Route:

The A822 from Crieff passes through the Sma’ Glen – for those unable to venture further into the Highlands this is like some of the more mountainous areas of Scotland in miniature. Access up and down the A9 is also possible, but exploratory works for the dualling (upgrade) of the A9 are still expected to be in progress.

The area is close to the A9, allowing an easy departure at the end of what will be a great week of orienteering in some very different terrain.

Grandtully has previously been connected with canoeing the rapids but there was a new type of downhill race with the final day of Strathearn 2019 in close proximity to the river. For yet another day the weather held out and the Middle Distance race was a fantastic finale to what has been a hugely successful Scottish 6 Days.

Today is a World Ranking Event.

The birthplace of Scottish orienteering, and widely regarded as one of the best orienteering areas in the country. Craig a Barns was used for the Scottish Championships in 1962 and was the first specially mapped area for orienteering in Scotland. The area has played host to various events, including the Jan Kjellstrom 1990 and more recently JK2012.

The Livestream today is focused on the M/W 21 Elite but not exclusively.

PLEASE NOTE:
Within the competition area, there has been an occurrence of pythopthera ramorum, a deadly pathogen causing major problems in parts of Scotland.

See https://forestry.gov.scot/sustainable-forestry/tree-health/phytophthora-ramorum

To help contain the possible spread of this pathogen we request that all competitors thoroughly wash their boots/shoes with water prior to leaving the event area at Craig a Barns. All soil and needle remains are to be cleaned from footwear and clothing. An area to do so will be provided at the end of the course.

This is the fastest and most open area being used for Strathearn 2019. There is a mix of open grazed moorland and some areas of heather with only the longest courses reaching the more dense conifer plantations with their intricate ride systems. There are numerous line features (ruined walls, fences, footpaths and ditches) and some fields with sheep and cattle (out of bounds) as well as enclosures for rearing birds (to be avoided). All courses finish through a mixed area of woodland.

The other end of the loch from Edinchip! Dundurn & Cnoc a'Mhadaidh is another new area for orienteering, with a very technical and mixed forest including oak woodland, beech and conifer plantations and virtually no paths or tracks. Less technical courses are likely to take in parts of the adjacent St Fillans Golf Course. The course is surprisingly level but is surrounded by towering and craggy hills and the imposing St Fillan’s Hill – a must for a control site.

The Livestream today is focused on the M/W 21 Elite but not exclusively.

Beautiful weather, a stunning race arena and some of the best orienteering terrain in Scotland. Today’s event near St Fillans had it all, with the added attraction of a World Ranking Event Middle Distance race (and Middle Distance for us all which was a welcome relief after two tough days).

Edinchip is a brand new area to orienteering and credit goes to Allan Downie (Tayside Orienteers) and Terry O’Brien (Event Coordinator) for their exploratory efforts finding new terrain that was under everyone’s noses all the time. Edinchip was technically less demanding than Auchingarrich, but instead offered a variety of different terrain types from sheep grazed moorland, birch forest, marsh, ancient oak woodland and more marsh!
