Slightly further afield, there’s plenty to see to the south of Inverness, heading along the A9 road.

Museums
- Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore – Living history museum with buildings of all kinds from throughout the Highlands, where guides in period costume demonstrate crafts and skills, all in a beautiful setting. Audio visual, tea room, gift shop. Free admission.
Nature
- Highland Wildlife Park, Kingussie – Scottish wildlife and endangered animals of the world's mountains and tundra, in a spectacular setting.
- Loch Garten Osprey Centre – RSPB reserve with information, binoculars and telescopes for viewing ospreys on the nest, as well as close-up views via CCTV. Many other birds and wildlife close at hand. Guided walks through the Caledonian pine forest.
- Cairngorm Reindeer Herd – Britain’s only herd of reindeer, free-ranging in the Cairngorms. Daily guided visits to the herd.
History
- Ruthven Barracks – An infantry barracks erected in 1719 following the Jacobite rising of 1715. Free admission.

- Loch Morlich Watersports, Aviemore – Hire of canoes, rowing boats, sailing boats, windsurfers. Sandy beach, café with balcony offering great views.
- Loch Insh Watersport and Activity Centre, Kincraig – Water sports include sailing, rowing, fishing, paddle boats and pedalos; dry activities include archery, play parks, and a dry ski slope, plus nature hike and bike trails.
- Craggan Outdoors, Grantown-on-Spey – Wide range of outdoor activities available, including archery, clay pigeon shooting, climbing, golf, gorge walking, high ropes, kayaking, mountain biking, paintball, pony trekking, white water rafting.
Family activities
- Landmark, Carrbridge – Forest-themed adventure park suitable for all ages. Attractions include treetop trail, fire tower, wildlife feeding area, labyrinth, steam-powered sawmill, high ropes course, water slides, roller coaster, plus indoor exhibits.
- Strathspey Railway – The only steam railway in the Scottish Highlands, running from Aviemore to Boat of Garten and Broomhill.

- Tomatin Distillery – One of the highest distilleries in Scotland, established in 1897. Visitor Centre, distillery tours.
- Cairngorm Brewery, Aviemore – Brewery tours, bottling plant, tastings and shop.
