Competition Information
General competition information, including courses, shadowing, start times, scoring, electronic punching, clothing, taping.
Age Class courses
A full range of age classes is available. Entry at the Event will be available only if there are unused start times and maps.
Elite classes
M21E and W21E will have a Classic race on Day 6. This will have a reverse order start, with start order based on their aggregate times over Days 1 to 5. The elite runners on M21E and W21E in first place after five days will start last at 13:00 (time to be confirmed), the second-placed runners at 12:59, third-placed at 12:58, etc. Runners who have not succcessfully completed all the first five days will be started at one minute intervals before runners who have completed all five days. Day 6 start times will be available online on the evening of Day 5, and in the Race Arena early on Day 6.
Like all other age classes, M21E and W21E will have a Middle Distance race on Day 3. See the Entries page for details of expected winning times.
Colour coded courses
There will be White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green and Green courses - Entry at the Event will be available, subject to map availability. These cover a spectrum of technical and physical difficulty, starting from very easy and progressing to more difficult.
Explanation of colour courses:
- White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
- Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
- Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
- Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
- Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
String and Off-String courses
There will be non-competitive (i.e. times are not recorded) String and Off-String courses provided each day for young children, using special maps. The courses will be open from 10:00 to 15:00. Electronic punching will be used.
Get ready to travel “Round the World” with the Scottish 6 Days String courses. Grab your passport on Day 1, and get it stamped as you complete another adventure each day. Where will we visit, and what will we see as we head off on our adventures?
The String courses are provided free of charge on each day of the competition, and are open to all juniors. For insurance reasons, we require the young explorers to register beforehand. See this item for further details.
Many thanks to Tunnocks, Walkers Shortbread, Forestry Commission, RAF Lossiemouth and NFU Mutual who have provided prizes for the String courses.
Shadowing children
We must ensure that the competition is fair to everyone. If juniors require shadowing, they must enter the colour coded courses. No shadowing will be allowed before your own run. The adult shadower must not pick up a map at the Start.
Pre-Start map viewing
Blank maps will be displayed in each day's Race Arena and in start lanes. Maps for courses 1, 2 , 8 and 9 will be displayed in the Race Arena for competitors to view before their run.
Start times
Starts are from 9:45 to 14:15, but may be extended if entry numbers warrant it. Courses close at 16:30.
If you are late for your start time, the start team will try to start you as soon as possible, but there may be a very long wait, as some courses are very full. Start times will not be changed at the Start, and punching starts will not be allowed except for those with 'PS' on their bib (event helpers and parents with split starts, and competitors on colour coded courses). For most competitors, start lists will be displayed in the Arena and your start time will be on your bib.
Start Procedure
There are 4 different Start locations: White, Green, Blue and Red. There will be signs to each Start when leaving the Arena, then the route to each Start will be indicated by appropriately coloured tape. Please make sure you head for the correct Start on leaving the Arena and follow the appropriate signs and tapes.
The start procedure is slightly different for Colour code and Age class competitors. See this item for full details.

Map scales
With the exception of Day 3 (where all courses will use 1:7,500) and the Elite Classic races on Day 6 (which will use 1:15,000), all 6-Days maps will be at a scale of 1:10,000.
The two Sprint race maps will be at 1:4,000.
Map sizes will be about A3 or A4.
All maps will be printed on waterproof paper.
Map contour intervals
The contour interval for all 6-Days maps is 5m.
The contour interval for the Sprint races is 2.5m.
Results
Results will be on display in the Race Arena and regularly updated on the web. Wi-Fi will be available in the Race Arena, courtesy of SPORTident. Results books will not be printed.
Scoring
For Elite classes, scoring is based on cumulative times over the week – i.e. competitors will need to complete every day.
For all other classes, points will be awarded for each day’s result, with points allocated based on finishing position. Thus, the class winner will receive 1 point, second-placed competitor 2 points, and so on. A competitor’s overall score will be the sum of their best four scores of the week. In the event of a tie between two or more competitors, the competitor with the lowest individual day placing will win. Competitors who fail to finish, who do not start, or who are disqualified, will be awarded a points score which is 5% higher than the maximum number (over all six days) of pre-entrants for the class.
Prizes
The prizegiving ceremony will be at 15:00 on Day 6. Prizes will be awarded to the first 3 in each of the Elite and Long classes, and to the first 3 in each of the M/W10 to M/W16 A and B classes. Prizes will also be awarded to the winners in each of the Short classes.
If any prizewinner is unable to attend, they must appoint someone to collect their prize on their behalf after the ceremony is over. Prizes will not be sent out, due to the nature of the prizes at this event.
Badges
Gold, Silver or Bronze cloth badges were available for sale during the event, price £3 each, for all those who qualified. To qualify, a competitor must have a score of less than a given benchmark, which will depend on the number of active competitors in their class (N), as follows. Gold: N x 0.8; Silver: N x 1.6; Bronze: N x 2.4
The points required for each Badge standard for each course are listed in this news item, which also gives details of how to purchase or upgrade a badge now that the event has finished.
Certificates
Certificates will be awarded to the first 3 in classes M/W10 to M/W16 A and B, on Days 1-5. They can be collected from the Information tent on the following day.
Electronic punching
The SPORTident electronic punching system will be used, and all versions of SI card are accepted. This includes SIAC touch-free cards, but the contactless option will not be switched on in the SI units, so competitors using them will need to punch at each control station in the ordinary way.
SI cards will be available to hire and can be booked via the online entries system.
Some of the Elite courses have 30 or more controls. Competitors with an SI-5 or SI-8 card (which can only accommodate 30 controls) will be contacted directly, and supplied with an appropriate SI card at no charge. These can be collected from Information.
It is essential that all competitors visit the Download tent by course closing time, whether or not they have finished their course.
Control Description sheets
All age class and colour coded courses will use pictorial control description sheets. Control descriptions will be printed on the front of competition maps; loose copies will be available in the start lanes.
Complaints, Protests and Appeals
Complaints should be made to the Day Organiser, either orally or in writing, at the Information tent up to 16:30 on the day of the competition. There is no fee for a complaint. The Day Organiser is the adjudicator of a complaint. A protest can be made against the Organiser’s decision, in writing to the Controller. Protests and appeals will be handled under Rule 16 of the 2014 British Orienteering Rules.
Clothing and Equipment
The torso and legs must be covered, and it is recommended that a whistle is carried. The Day Organiser may require a cagoule/waterproof jacket to be worn/carried if the weather is bad – if so, notices will be displayed in the Race Arena and on the route to the Starts.
Bibs
Must be worn on all days, by all competitors. No bib = no run. Please write relevant medical information (e.g. allergies, medication) on the back of your bib.
Taping
The following colours will be used: yellow/black - danger; red/white - out of bounds/crossing points; white only - taped routes in terrain. Routes to Starts will be taped according to the Start colour.
