The competition is designed to provide the highest quality orienteering over the week, in a relaxed holiday atmosphere, and aims to appeal to all ages and skill levels, from elite athletes to newcomers. Age classes range from 10 years and under to 80 years and above!
A strong international representation is always present at each 6-Days event, with a traditionally large Scandinavian contingent, and more recently the event has become increasingly popular with competitors from Eastern Europe.

The event is overseen by the Scottish Orienteering 6-Day Event Company, and organised by all of Scotland’s orienteering clubs, who co-ordinate central organisation as well as individual race days. Additional assistance is provided where required by other UK clubs and individuals.

The main management and running of each biennial 6-Day Orienteering Event is delegated to a Central Organising Committee formed from a group of clubs on the request of the Board of Directors of the 6-Day Orienteering Company.

The Central Organising Committee is led by a Co-ordinator, appointed by the Board of Directors; it is also supported by the Scottish Orienteering Association Professional Officer who is appointed as the Assistant Co-ordinator.

Each biennial event is overseen by one of the Board of Directors; this Director attends the Central Organising Committee meetings and keeps a watching brief on the event.

In addition, each Director has an area of expertise and responsibility. This is built up over time from experience gained at each 6-Day Event, the reports received from post-holders for each event and personal experience. Most post-holders on the Central Organising Committee can therefore consult directly with one of the 6-Day Company Directors.
