“I did a little orienteering when I was a teenager and then re-discovered it as a family-friendly activity when my son was young. In both cases I was made welcome by a friendly local orienteering club.
“I’ve been orienteering regularly for about 25 years. I can’t think of any notable competitive achievements but I am pleased to have been able to take on many volunteer roles such as the club committee, organising, planning and controlling events.
“My first S6D was in 2003 and I’ve taken part in all but one since then. This is first time I’ve taken on a major role. The scale of the S6D is impressive. Planning courses for thousands of competitors is a challenge.”
Rob Hickling
Role: Planner
Club: Badenoch and Strathspey O.C.
“I’m one of the two course planners, responsible for planning all the courses for the race at Glen Dye (forest race 5).
“I began orienteering in 1981; I was introduced to it by my wife, who had taken part in the sport whilst at University at Durham. I’ve run for Scotland in my age class in the Veteran Home International match 11 times, most recently in 2024. I’ve won my age class at the Scottish Orienteering Championships twice, in 2011 and 2014.
“The S6D is a week of high standard orienteering, with a real ‘big event’ atmosphere. I’ve been a Race Controller at the S6D four times before, and the Event Technical Coordinator once.”
